“The most beautiful home on Prince Edward Island”

Gracious Mansion & Estate
Host to “Anne of Green Gables” author,
 L. M. Montgomery

“The most beautiful home on Prince Edward Island”... a guest returning
from Vancouver, BC, to his native province, Prince Edward Island.

A rare opportunity. BLACK FOX MANOR INN & FINE DINING provides warm hospitality in one of the province’s most venerable turn of the century mansions. The offering is nonpareil. With convenient access to the capital city, Charlottetown, the manor’s rooms command hilltop views of the south-eastern shore region.

Many consider this the island’s most desirable and beautiful region. It is a region enjoying a unique phenomenon producing the warmest sea waters north of the Carolinas. Due to the fortunate positioning of the Northumberland Strait, the summer’s Gulf Stream creates waters of bathtub temperatures. Your most difficult choice each day may be choosing your beach; do you prefer white sand, red sand, still surf for starfish gazing or crashing waves below secluded cliffs?

High season rates begin at $90 and include full gourmet breakfasts.

Enjoy farm-to-table fine dining. Daily table d'hôte menus are offered at affordable prices in the home’s formal dining room overlooking the lawns. You may relax gazing through the same windows as “Anne of Green Gables” author, LM Montgomery in the last century. The inspiring beauty remains today; however, the rare and magnificent century linden trees now tower above the home’s three stories. We wonder if Ms. Montgomery envisioned how they may have grown in the years beyond her?

It is a privilege to share the beauty and ambiance of our home and region. We have created dining to complete your experience of this special place. It is our intention to exceed your expectations to create your most treasured fond memory of Prince Edward Island.

THE MANSION: The three story, eight bedroom home was built in 1899-1900. The home is a superb Colonial Queen Anne Victorian Double Dutch Gambrel in an elegant country style that remains essentially original with artisan moldings and woodwork. There are four original hand carved European fireplaces. Much of the interior woodwork remains unaltered, retaining its distinctive depth of its genuine, early, deep and rich varnish. References of the home occur in several novels written of the island.

The second and third stories offer well appointed rooms overlooking the estate lawns with distant pastoral vistas. Front rooms enjoy views directly into the upper broad branching of the towering rare century linden trees.

From your comfortable old world atmosphere, you’ll enjoy convenient access to the island’s many features. Whether exploring beaches or conducting business in nearby Charlottetown, BLACK FOX MANOR provides you with restful, quiet evenings. Your room is furnished with a featherbed and luxurious high thread count bed linens. The ultimate night’s sleep is often the morning’s topic of comments by guests at breakfast.

Nearby panoramas from the Point Prim Peninsula extend across the sea to Nova Scotia. The Caledonia Hills of the Northumberland Strait shore region is a magnificent setting. The nearby sea offers the warmest waters of the island’s many beaches. Thanks to the summer course of the Gulf Stream, our nearby bathtub temperature waters are the warmest north of the Carolinas.

Your comfort is ensured with our attention to the details of your visit. Private touring and concierge services are available. We take great pride in your personalized hospitality to guarantee your BLACK FOX MANOR experience, whether an overnight stay, dining, business meeting, or special occasion, exceeds your expectations. We invite your special requests. Our sincere goal is to count you among our repeat guests who cite their stay as the highlight of your holiday.

ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS: Prince Edward Island is only 224 km (140 miles) long, allowing easy excursions over the gentle, idyllic, rolling hills. From the sophisticated activities of downtown to the tranquil seacoast, there are activities and sights for everyone. Guests enjoy public or secluded beaches, sailing, sea adventures, nature trails, bicycle trails, world-class golf (there are over 20 courses on the island), harness racing, graceful lighthouses, charming seaside villages, carefully cultivated farmlands, waterfront boardwalks, museums, theatre, summer playhouses, fine dining, fine art galleries, historic sites and heritage tours, horse-drawn carriage rides, public gardens, amusement parks, Anne of Green Gables attractions, boutiques, cafes/coffeehouses, farm markets, artisan galleries, year-round festivals include the largest Maritime winter festival, traditional music, ceilidhs, and open air concerts. Both English and French are widely spoken.

WEATHER: Summer is comfortably warm with consistent island breezes. Swimming is fantastic. Our favored, sheltered location in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and our fortunate warm Gulf Stream creates the warmest ocean water north of the Carolinas along the uncrowded Northumberland Strait beaches. You’ll be comfortable in short sleeves during the day, with a cotton sweater for evening.

Autumn is long and warm. The rolling hills covered in brilliant foliage are overwhelming upon the first experience. Golf courses and restaurants are less crowded than in summer, but the weather is often as pleasant.

Winter is moderately cold with snow. The Confederation Trail which covers the length of the island and hosts bicyclists and hikers in warmer weather is now turned over to snowmobilers. PEI does winter well. The historic towns and villages turn indoors for music. Enjoy the magical winter landscape from your warm and comfortable dining room enjoying freshly prepared homemade meals.

Spring is variable. Layers of clothing ensure your comfort.

A note from your host:
The island province reminds us of the sleepy agricultural Sonoma County, California of half a century ago. The relaxed pace, wholesome communities and rolling green hills, descending to a gentle sea, all contribute.

Last week, as we walked a nearby country road to the beach, several young foxes appeared from under the wild rose thickets that lined the road. The foxes played nonchalantly as we passed. The rose fragrance mixed in the gentle sea breeze. A short way further, the red clay road offered views across the water to Nova Scotia. At the road’s end is the island’s oldest lighthouse, the beautiful and austere Point Prim Lighthouse.

Billy Martin, a lifelong resident of the island and descendant of the original residents of BLACK FOX MANOR, came by to visit. Billy invited us to attend his 80th birthday party. He’d assured us we would never be sorry we chose to live on this island. His island family’s long history provides Billy with welcomed stories of the great kindness and character of the people who call this place, Canada’s smallest, most beautiful island province, home.

It is our sincere desire that BLACK FOX MANOR hospitality offered you will create your treasured memories of this truly enchanted place.

If we can be of assistance in planning your island holiday, please contact me personally.

$35 Table d'hôte. Heritage archives reference the celebrated author’s visits to BLACK FOX MANOR while visiting Sir Andrew Macphail. His homestead is a short carriage ride away in Orwell. Now a National Historic Property, the property offers nature trails and wildlife programs. It is a popular destination for bird watching and native flora and fauna identification walks. The Macphail Homestead is a five minute drive from BLACK FOX MANOR.

“Anne of Green Gables” was first published in 1908. BLACK FOX MANOR was an important home in Ms. Montgomery’s time. At the turn of the 19th Century, prominent homes enjoyed lawns ornamented with pairs of imported European linden trees. The custom was to plant pairs in symmetry to showcase the approach to the home. The shade offered out of door enjoyment. Ms. Montgomery would have viewed these young trees from the dining room windows when she was a guest here. Now century trees, they were only a quarter century old in her time. She may have imagined these tress today, majestic with girths exceeding twenty feet. Their full spreading heads tower high above the three storied rooftops of BLACK FOX MANOR. The home’s second and third floor rooms now enjoy views directly into the mid-upper branches of these rare majestic trees.

Join us in the original formal dining room for a delicious re-creation of an early century meal. By reservation, please, 902 659-2988.
